The Trinity of Good Health
The Fountain of Youth
There is almost no preventive medicine coming out of our medical doctors offices in the US. Our doctors know how to diagnose, prescribe medications and perform surgery. When we have a broken leg, or need stitches, our doctors are superb!
For Preventive Health, it's really up to us to be informed consumers about what to do to stay healthy.
My advice is, if you want to get healthy and stay healthy, follow the Trinity of Good Health - Exercise, Weight Management and Supplements.
Exercise: The Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Sports Magazine tell us that we need 30 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. When you think about it, that’s only 3.5 hours out of 168 hours in a week. Strength training combined with cardio is the real combination we need. You need strong muscles and you need a strong heart and lungs. Circuit training is the ideal. Even a 30 minute brisk walk will be a boost to your metabolism and your over all good health.
Weight management is more of a challenge. Statistics show that at least 50% of our population is overweight. We are a fast food generation. We are a land of plenty. Good food is everywhere. Many of our activities and celebrations revolve around food. It's less expensive and easier to go to the drive up window. It's more expensive to eat fresh fruit and vegetables than it is to satisfy our immediate hunger going through the drive up window for us and for our kids. It takes time to peel an orange, it takes time to make a salad and prepare a nutritious meal. But it's worth the time.
Supplements: Most of our foods today have less than half the nutrients in them that they did half a century ago. Fruits and vegetables have to be picked green and shipped across country. We need good multivitamins to take up the slack for our fast food treks and even our “nutritious foods” just don't have the nutrients we need.
We Baby Boomers are looking for the Fountain of Youth. If you follow the Trinity of Good Health, you will look young and feel great long into your advanced age. At this time, this is the only ticket to the Fountain of Youth.
